Across an Imagined Border [2002]

With the Deutsche Bahn Over the Main Line of the Cold War

Photograph shows the panorama of former West Germany as seen from trains heading westward out of former East Germany in 2002.

n that summer, I returned to Berlin for the first time since 1971. This account of my ride with the locomotive engineer (engine driver) over the Magdeburg - Helmstedt line and its connections is now a period piece in itself. The former U.S. Army Rail Transportation Office in Lichterfelde-West is gone now, the Line 68 tram no longer runs every ten minutes, etc.
