With the Deutsche Bahn Over the Main Line of the Cold War

Panorama of former West Germany seen from trains heading westward out of former East Germany in 2002.

by R. W. Rynerson

In the summer of 2002, I returned to Berlin for the first time since 1971.  This account of my ride with the locomotive engineer (engine driver) over the Magdeburg – Helmstedt line and its connections is now a period piece in itself.  The former U.S. Army Rail Transportation Office in Lichterfelde-West building is gone now, the Line 68 tram no longer runs every ten minutes, etc. This story is in Adobe pdf format.  The links in it are no longer active.
